About the East Market Neighborhood

The East Market Neighborhood is located off Railroad Street on the east side of the Rochester Public Market.

The neighborhood’s rich history is tied directly to the Market:  Most of the homes in the neighborhood were built over a 15-year period beginning in 1905, after the Market moved from its original location on the Genesee River to its current site. Many of the neighborhood’s early homeowners worked at the Market or at nearby businesses on Railroad Street. Until the late 1930s light rail service ran through the neighborhood, carrying customers and workers from the city’s east-side neighborhoods to the Market.

Today the East Market Neighborhood is enjoying a resurgence, driven by young homebuyers seeking affordable real estate prices, a welcoming and diverse neighborhood, and homes that are a short walk to restaurants and other amenities.

The East Market Neighborhood Association

For several decades the neighborhood was known as the GP4H Neighborhood, for Garson Avenue, Peck Street, Fourth Street, and Hayward Avenue, the four residential streets on the east side of the Public Market. Led by a committed group of homeowners, the neighborhood has had an active neighborhood association for more than 50 years. The association’s steering committee recently voted to officially re-name the neighborhood the East Market Neighborhood to highlight our historic ties to the Market.

Our mission is to:

  • Foster a sense of community and connection among neighbors

  • Undertake projects that beautify the neighborhood and improve livability

  • Foster homeownership

The neighborhood association meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm, and all neighbors are welcome.  For more information, contact us at hello@eastmarketneighborhood.org.
